16V clutch and rear main seal
« on: May 28, 2009, 07:36:42 AM »

So I know this is a VW car club....

And I also know some people like to work on cars....

I figured I'd throw this out there...

Starting tonight or tomorrow, I am going to start my 16V clutch and rear main seal job.... Fairly involved....

I don't really need any help, but help is appreciated, and if you want to just swing by an bullshit, that's cool too... Just figured I'd let everyone know I was actually going to work on a VW...  :)

Ok.... so I know I didnt post anything in here during the actual work, but everything is back together now....

Anyone want to come up and try to help me figure out why it is not starting? (I know.... seems to be a recurring problem for me)

Anyhow.... I'll be cleaning up the garage tonight, and be looking to fire up tomorrow after work

I had a 91 GTI with an 8 valve and I know yours may not be exactly the same but here goes:

When I first got it, it wasn't running. I was told that the clutch was just done so I started doing a little research and it turns out that on that particular car, if you don't clean, clean, clean all the grounds, especially the one that hooks on the trans from the battery, it will fry the computer. Mine fired all 4 injectors constantly and thus filled the crankcase with fuel. Put a new computer in it and it smoked like a bitch for a few miles but ran fine afterward.

I also had an 86 GTI in high school that when I had the clutch done it had a similar problem where it wouldn't start and it was caused because it kept frying the knock box which is essentially the computer up in the cowl. I now suspect that it was a ground issue. I put a knock box in it and it ran for a few more months and then did the same thing.

Not sure if this is similar to your problem but I hope my terrible experiences help.

thanks for the advice  :t-up:

I have had horrible ground issues working on different cars in the past, so as a general rule now, I clean and inspect all ground connections before test firing....

I am hoping it is the front knock sensor, which is in horrible condition....

Chris - I should be home around 4 or 430.... depending.... you working tomorrow?

No, but I can't stay out all night. I'll have to leave around 8ish because I have a paper I need to write at some point in the evening.

not the current configuration - but this was how I set it up when the cars were delivered....

Currently, the Cobra is on the floor, and the VRT is on the lift.... 4Runner and Mach1 are in the adjacent bay....
