I mountain bike competitively, I can definitely point you in the right direction.  What do you plan on doing (light cross country trails or more technical stuff eventually) and what is your budget?

BTW if anybody wants to ride sometime let me know (either mtn or road)

I would highly suggest performance bicycle, mainly because they have great prices on everything and its a big company. I went to Colorado Cycles (I think) off Academy? Anyhow... I called my brother to compare the prices to his shop and they had about a 300 dollar premium over his prices for nothing special. I also have a 10% off card from performance I got in the mail if you want it.

Lets go for a ride this week!!!!!!  Thursday or Friday would be awesome.
Juan I'll go running wednesday too. :t-up:

Start off with something simple, yet high quality.

A fixed frame Specialized would be a good starting point  :t-up:

I used to ride a lot.  Haven't been out in a couple years, but kept the bike in ridable condition.  I'd like to get back out, but holy crap am I out of shape.

BTW, I have a Specialized Stumpjumper.  I'd strongly advocate a Specialized, but keep in mind:  The components can be upgraded if you decide you like it.  The frame can't.  I'd try to find a decent entry to mid level bike in any of the major manufacturers.  Consider spending a minimum of about $400, maybe even more, for a "good" started bike.  Spend less and you will likely not enjoy riding enough to continue.

My 2 cents.

There's a lot of options these days.

You can get a hardtail with just front suspension for a lot less than a comparable full susp. bike.

Suspension travel varies from a couple of inches to 8+. For recreational trail riding 4 front and rear should be good and that's pretty standard on XC bikes.

The major companies would be a good starting point since you can get the most bang for the buck on a budget.  Out of those I'd recommend Giant, Specialized, and Trek.  I've ridden multiple bikes by all of those companies.  If you wanted to look into boutique brands, let me know and I can give you more info.  You'd be spending more, but generally get higher quality, handbuilt, and better components (of course, components can always be upgraded).  Also, check out craigslist you can often find good used deals on some higher end stuff.

This is what I ride:

Downhill (8/8): Giant Faith
Trail (6/6): Rocky Mountain Slayer SXC70
Freeride Hardtail (4): Norco Sasquatch
Road: Giant TCR2
BMX: S&M Dirt Bike Classic

Pics of my mountain bikes:

The Sasquatch and Slayer

Also, if anybody is interested here is a video I made a few months ago of me and some friends riding last year:

I was supposed to ride with the President last summer.  Got screened by secret service and we had it all set up but he had to readjust his schedule at the last minute  :t-down:

Rocky Mountain bikes are lame.  :P.  Just kidding! Specialized are sweet, you could also look at Kona bikes.

In all honesty im trying to go the cheapest route possible. I know you get what you pay for but I dont know if im going to be doing this forever so I cant justify spending boatloads on a bike. I want something cheap that does the job, so I can ride soon and have fun and then I'll eventually upgrade my juant!

Just get enough bike to get a decent (read that light) frame.

how about a trek 4300 around $478  or the 3700 at $379.  I'm looking at this 4300 or some used full suspension on craigslist

I've been out of the scene for a loooonnngggg time.  But, i can and always will reccomend Colorado Springs Bike Shop, it may be a bit of a drive depending on where you live, but if you want to be treated fairly and pay reasonable prices, go there.

Performance can suck my ****.  When i priced my bike, exact same frame components, etc, they wanted 300 more than colorado springs bike shop did, and thats on a bike that was $900, they wanted $1200.  Not only that, the guy kept trying to sell me pricier components pulling the gram counting card, when i'm sitting there telling him that i weigh 330 lbs and strength/durability is first and foremost over ANYTHING else. That and i had to stand there looking at bikes for almost 20 minutes before anyone even came over to talk to me.  I'll never buy from them, ever.

Oh, almost forgot:

www.mtbr.com

Best site in the world for gear reviews.  generally they are given by people who ride, have used the items extensively in real world apps.  Because they are user submitted you can get fanboyism especially when it comes to frames/forks, but for most components, you can get good solid info.

I would also avoid a full suspension as your first bike.

Number of reasons, first of all, for most entry level and even mid level riding, you simply don't need a full susp.  The second issue is the rear suspension absorbs a lot of your pedaling energy, and makes you work a lot harder to do something you could do easily on a hardtail (especially vertical ascents), this can be very discouraging to an aspiring rider.  Now, i know some newer suspension styles are a lot better about not soaking up nearly as much pedaling energy, so thats something else to look into.

Good advice.

Also, I will second the FU to performance bikes. Don't go there.  I've heard too many stories about how they have fucked people over.  As a general rule, I support local bike shops and not national chains such as performance.

Call up Pat and Clay at Ascent Cycling on Stetson Hills and Powers: 719-597-8181.  They are good honest guys who won't bullshit you and they sell quality stuff.  Alternatively, I recommend Criterium Bicycles off of Woodmen near I-25.  Good shop as well.

And for your budget, a full suspension setup is pretty much out of the question.  Get the higher quality hardtail, build skills and work your way up.  It's addicting though, be ready!  My bikes are worth way more than my last Audi was.

Go used. Take the BMX guy with you. Treks are my favorite brand, but mostly because I know them the best. The 4300 is a great mid/entry level bike. Look around the Boulder CL (if there is one), those kind of rich hippy areas are full of people who custom build their bikes and buy new shit every year.
