My mkIII finally let me down
« on: April 19, 2009, 12:48:29 AM »

So.. I was driving home on Friday, and ran into some standing water. The water drenched my coilpack, and apparently, there were the very common hairline cracks in it, or at least there are now....

I tried the $5 epoxy fix, and there is still a horrible mis-fire. Does anyone have a spare VR coilpack laying around that I could borrow to make sure it is in fact a bad pack? I'd hate to buy a new one only to find out there is a different problem... I'm trying to get a solution on paper by tomorrow night so I can proceed accordingly Monday.

Let me know!

Yeah.... VR coilpack is a VR coilpack...

Give me a call before you head up, my lacrosse game starts at 11, and should be done by 1 or 2 at the latest.

Ok... so I tried swapping a coilpack off of Mike's mkIV that he epoxy fixed a few months ago... It was working fine on his car when he took it off.

I had to swap the back plate that had the harness connection because the mkIII and IV harness connectors are different.

Same results: Good idle, but horrible misfire under any kind of load. No CEL either.

Any ideas?

Air, spark or fuel. Spark's pretty much ruled out. Maybe moisture in the injector harness? Only other thing I can think of is a minor hydrolock that cracked a ring. Can you tell which cylinder is missing? Maybe it's being stupid with timing retard from something like a faulty crank position sensor.

Considering that I have a stock intake, and that the filter was dry, I am going to say hydrolock is out. Additionally, I don't think the car would idle smooth with a bad cylinder.

I am going to run some fuel treatment in it tonight with 5 gallons of fresh gas (pretty much empty now).

I am also going to disconnect the cat, and see if that improves anything. I can't explain how running a 150K mile cat through some standing water would ruin it, but I have a feeling it can. Additionally, checking for flow out of the tail pipe, there is none. There is some steam from the condensation, but no pressure what so ever...

Once it starts to clog, it gets stupid hot.  This you run through some cold water and it splashes up on the cat and breaks up some of the super-heated material.  Bam, you got an almost completely clogged cat.  A partially clogged cat may have been what was slowing it down before.  ???

Just a thought, though I am not positive it is possible.

yeah... thats what I was thinking too... Either way, clogged or not, when I disconnect the cat from the downpipe tonight, it will be getting hollowed out.

That will definitely be noticable.  Especially if it is doing what I thought it could be doing.

I had a cat clog and overheat. I was driving around and my car pretty much just stopped moving. I managed to get it into a parking lot and a guy said he saw a couple glowing red bits shoot out the exhaust. Removed the cat and had a good time smashing it into things like the side of a dumpster to break up the ceramic inside, reinstalled and no problem. It was quite fun watching little leftover bits come flying out of the exhaust as I gunned it to remove all the ceramic.
