Thanks Josh! That pic was taken on one of my x-country treks. That was in NE with a thunderstorm chasing me. I got just far enough ahead of it to pull over and snap that pic. The b&w version of it is really sweet as it hides the body imperfections.
Basically, Josh sold the car to me when his knee was really bad because he couldn't work the clutch well (as I understand it). When driving home one day, I snapped the timing belt and didn't know it until the hg totally blew and steam was shooting everywhere. Solo headswaps are a bit out of my realm, so the car sat for a little bit. Then I had to move to NY and couldn't afford to tow the car and couldn't find anyone to help with a headswap. So, I sold it for essentially pocketchange to some guy in Ft. Collins who wanted a project and was going to redo it. Apparently, he has a rep of starting projects, but not a rep of finishing them... He sold it to another guy who stripped it and determined the body far too rusty to save. I really have no idea how he got that idea. I imagine there was some scary spots under there as the bondo work done for the body kit was starting to crack on the front fenders and there was some funky bondo work on the doors, but overall it was pretty damn solid for any car, let alone an '81 mk1 rocco. No wheel well rust, no hatch rust, no hood rust from chips, no (visable) rust around the window seals. Pretty much no visable rust in all of the usual places. Underside appeared solid but never looked too closely. I know the front floor was solid. The car was parted, the kit was pulled but is not in use and the rest of the car was sent to the junkyard. The wheels were kept by the guy I sold the car to. Overall, quite tragic. And quite stupid by the last owner, who clearly had no idea what he was dealing with since I tracked him down from a vortex post where he was selling the engine for $200 but had no clue about it.
