I put my CAT back in...
« on: February 17, 2009, 01:47:28 PM »

for my emission test this morning.  Emission testing has gone a long way since the last time I messed with it.  Last time i did an emission's was at the jiffy lube south/west in the Chapel Hills Mall parking lot.  That was about 8 years ago.  Now the State ran Air Care Colorado sites have AWD dyno's and shit.  I'm was just going to try and see if my Test Pipe would sneak past but I'm glad I had an ounce of common sense and motivation to swap in that CAT cause while I was there this morning, a ricer civic had a test pipe and his ass got fined.

Side Note:

REVO File passes just fine :t-up:

Other Side Note:  The Test Pipe is going back in :t-up: :t-up:

Wow when did they start fining you for failing? I thought failing and not registering your car was punishent for not passing.

Fucking CARB wanna be Nazi's. Honestly, if you meet and beat the emissions requirements coming out of the tailpipe, why should they care if you have an airpump, cat, or stock airfilter? They can keep driving their damn Prius and remain confident that they're better than the punk kid in the cat-less honda. ::)

They spotted an Illegal Test Pipe resulting in a fine tampering/removing emission related items.

Yeah, just as they pulled my car on the dyno I suddenly realized what settings I had on my REVO and started to freak out.  But if I failed, I just would have set everything to stock, drove back around for the free re-test.  It was funny though, after the tech pulled my car on the dyno, he was more interested in how I had my V1 hardwired then his clutch work…he stalled it.

Not sure, I just over heard the ricer dude challenging a “CAT fine” with the cashier then the door closed behind him.

I think it would pass, my old 1.8T Jetta had apr program and no cat and it passed emissions!  I had to use the vagcom to get the cel to turn on before I pulled the car in though. Funny as the guy climbed under neath, didn't see a cat, gave me an evil smile (probably thought I pulled the bulb on the cluster) and then pluged in a scan tool.  The look on his face was priceless when he didn't get a code!  Car passed just fine though.

yeah... it would be pretty hard to prove that you were the person that actually took the cat off in a court of law... fine was probably around $100... enough to piss you off, but not enough to take it to court over....

For what it's worth... I have had several emission tests when I had my 5.0L's with no cats, and all pass...

You just have to run a shitload of octane booster on a almost empty tank when you are getting ready to pull into the test station.

E85 (mix of about 3:1) added to a total of less than 1/4 tank will pass just about anything, plus, it won't harm anything with that low of a concentration

WTF? Because of the higher octane ED??
And why did rubbing alcohol work?

alcohol (also in E85 ;) ) releases oxygen when its burned... more oxygen means more Hydrocarbons are converted and the more CO turned to CO2, the two things that often cause failures in emissions testing

Carlos man... catch up to the year 2000 already :P

it can fool the oxygen sensor into thinking its running lean (on a N/A car) or think that its running Stoich (on a Forced induction car).... on a car not designed to run E85 it can eat rubber (non-nytrile/non-plastics) hoses and unplated Aluminum (annodized alumimum is OK).  All modern fuel injectors are typically E85 compatible.  All fuels presently contain ethanol (usually 5-10-15%)... running 3:1 strength (3gal gasoline to 1gal E85) isn't going to do jack shit to your car.  if your paranoid, after you pass emissions, you can immediately go and fill your tank full with premium.  This trick gets used a LOT by Mk1 owners who can't pass emissions... ask Skurv ;)

I was more talking about pouring rubbing alcohol into your tank... the e85 mix is just a lil heavier than the oxygenated stuff you get at the pump that they put 10%  ethanol into...

rubbing alcohol also has water... i.e. if its 80% alcohol, the other 20% is water...

well... you don't need higher %... you just don't want any lower really

the water (in very sparing amounts) will also in effect cause a lower flame front temp, lower exhaust temp = lower nitrogen in your exhaust = gooder emissions.  Same as running Water-Methanol spray.. BUT... running a lot of water through your injectors is a bad thing, but in a stable mix with Alcohol, it won't pose any damage to the pintles.  Higher alcohol percentages can typically be purchased (up to 98%?) in drug stores.  I don't know about Water-Meth to pass emissions.... where is Greg? LOL!

Well it sounds like water meth will do exactly that... more oxygen and lower exhaust temps as I know the water also helps cool the charge on force fed cars.
In my case Im really going to use it to keep from having to run an intercooler when I bump the boost to 12lbs and it will make my car run more consistent since the air going in the chamber will stay the same temps instead of rising the more I drive it as it does now.
Nate also said I can just run reg pump gas instead of premy, but I'll probably still feed my car 91...

in theory yes... but I haven't heard anyone specifically use water-meth for passing emissions... a $4 bottle of alcohol vs a $400 water-Meth setup.  I would like to see though a pair of emissions tests "before" and "after".  Bottles of Alcohol and E85 mixes are proven to pass emissions... unless your car is so ungodly out of spec running race gas or something.  Oh ya... Sunnoco 114 Race gas.... YOU WILL FAIL LOL!

I run 93octane 98 RON when I run my meth on 100 tune. I have run 89octane 91 RON with meth and without logging, it felt a little less but not much. But I definitely can feel the consistency  in the pulls, with meth. I just got smarter today. thanks :t-up:

Sweet. Yeah Im gonna stay with the 91, for me its more about consistency and cooling that charge.  Car should run stronger too since it wont have to dial back the timing...

Love the chemistry lesson.

at the laboratory I work at there a few other things that...namely organic solvents or strong oxidizers that will pretty much donate oxygen molecules willingly.

One of the most fun ones is Toluene... ;D
