I sent an email to the company so we'll see what they say.  It says on their page that they offer 1 year warrany no questions asked...

ok, so I finally got a hold of them on the phone, and the dude was asking me for the oil return line size and if I have an oil restrictor plate.  He said if I didn't install it with a restrictor plate then the pressure would have been to much for the seals and would cause them to blow.  He then said if that is the reason they won't replace it under warranty because of an incorrect install...I'm about to shoot this dude in the face  :censored:

This sounds like asking questions to me...

Yeah, go with the "but your page says 1yr warranty no questions asked" bit. Keep the info you give them to the bare minimum and keep hammering that point. A little bit of attitude can help as well.

I haven't quite got my ase cert's so I left the part of me doing the swap out.  I just said that I had it installed and we took it out for a couple test drives.  The first was successful, the second was not.

copy and paste from the ebay ad:

"WHY BUY FROM US
We are recognized by our OUTSTANDING PERFORMANCE and PROFESSIONALIS M
You can not find better!
Best Price, High Quality, 1 year factory warranty
Exclusive warranty plan!
All of our products come with 1 year warranty: Anything happens, replace for free!"

He asked specifics like if a restrictor plate was installed and what the diameter is of the oil return line.  I said "I'm not sure, I'll have to check with the mechanic and get back to you."

Isn't this more or less a bolt on deal?  I'm not quite understanding what's going on with them asking you about oil restrictors and crap?

Oil restrictor plate my ass. It's supposed to just go where the ko3 is with the factory oil/coolant supply and drain/return.  They are giving you the run around.

That's exactly what I was thinking...but I thought, well maybe he thinks I'm just installing the turbo on some random car instead of a 1.8t, but I decided to play it like I didn't have anything to do with the work (just in case by some chance I missed the big 'ole caution that would have appeared had I really needed to install a said restrictor plate...).  I'll probably give them a call tomorrow after a run in the local mud hole.

Ps. I appoligize for any misspells, gramatical errors or anything that doesn't make sense in this post.  I am completely hammered right now!!!  :mug_o_beer:

Ok, so I've been too busy to post the results of this fiasco.

I got them to send out a new turbo and magically it worked!  Go figure, they sent me a defective turbo (genious knuckleheads didn't believe me).  Took a week or so to completely burn off the oil that had saturated the exhaust but everything is all good now.  It pulls like a champ!  I need to get it dynoed but that's the least of my worries right now.  Got too many other projects going on right now...

Here's my old ko4 back in 2004 which gave up on second creek raceway. Got 6k miles on it when it blew, white smoke, loss of compression, rings were shot too.

And it was snowing when I pulled it out lol.

I had the same thing happen with my MR2, Bought a new turbo and the seals blew, Smoke everywhere, Lucky to hit 3 lbs of boost. The company who sold me mine wouldn't replace it. The oil return lines were clogged.

yo mark glad you got things figured out.  i remember we text'd back and forth about the first turbo for quite some time.  and oliver is right, their comments about a restrictor and the drain line are bull shit.  a k04 onto a 1.8t is basically oem.  no changes in inlet or outlet lines.  you do sometimes have to run a restrictor with t-type turbos but it that wouldn't apply in this situation.

Thanks!

That's exactly was I was thinking, and I hadn't heard/read of anything different, but when the first douche bag asked me I just played dumb and said I'd ask the mechanic in case I missed something...wh en I called back though, the second guy was cool.  He said, "oh yeah, no prob.  Sorry about that first turbo, I'll send another one out.  If that one doesn't work either, then I'll just give you your money back.."

Since the APR shop is so close (2 1/2 hrs), I wouldn't mind driving up there and having them update my chip for the k04, and some other stuff.  If I had a couple thou layin around it woulda been fun to give them my car and say "make it fast"  haha.
