Sounds like you may have a bad coolant temp sensor

Yes they are very moody when starting in cold temps...... be sure to give it a few mins to warm up. Also it won't get that hot either which is good thing. You should probably set aside about 15% of all paychecks for the problems that will happen with it EG: ABS module crapping out(800 bones alone), passenger's seat airbag deciding to quit, 02 sensors, eating through MAFs. Welcome to B5's. How many miles are on it?

Different sensor.  I'm talking about the one that tells the ECU the temp of the engine

well i got it scanned and it poped up 4 codes:

po422- cat below threshold

po441- evap emissions flow fault

po134- o2 sensor check , no activity

po501- veh. speed sensor range/performance sensor A

so i talked to the dealer there going to fix the problems for free which is sweet cause i don't have the loot to right now. the car has 160,xxx miles onit and i'm the 2nd owner the service has been pretty regular onit atleast for the past  5 years dosent leak any oil from the engine/tranny/diff i cleaned the maf and the sensor right after the throttle body starts alot easyer now but still hard when it's cooled down ,also once it's up to temp the turbo lag seems to be alot less

i did spin out in it this morning cause lexington ave was a sheet of ice and some pecker-head blew a stop sign but no damage.

Congrats on your purchase.

I should have seen this thread earlier though.

I owned a black 2001 a4 manual.  Loved the car.

What is the mileage on the one you have...dont think I saw it posted it-.

Anyway my two cents on this is, yes the turbo..sludge. ..checking for that was crucial, but the B5 chassis, both passat and a4s had TONS of problems with front control arms, both upper and lower, along with tie rod ends and bushings going bad.

I would have suggested checking those prior to purchase, bc 80 percent of vehicles that were not properly maintained started having problems.

I think that the passat even had a recall on 98 through 00 models for the control arm issues....I would check bc that may have covered the a4s as well....

Good luck with everything...

All in all you just have to take good care of that car...My experience was that i will never buy another audi unless it has warranty... :t-up:

na i didn't pay much at all plus i got a good amount for my bmw , mechanical issues don't bother me cause no matter what car u buy there's allways the same old story , they cost alot to fix , blah blah blah blah blah .
the only car i've owned were i got rid it cause it was a money pit was a land rover disco , but my past audi's have allways been good to my like my dubs , it's that my dubs are running up on 25+ years old. the audi is going to be a daily till i wrecked it or it dies , prefer wrecking it then i got a 1.8t to sell or find something to put it in , i'm sure the dasher will still need a motor by then  ;D

Or you should of bought one of those VW branded Audis... the ones without the turbo? VR6 or 2.0. The best engines ever! I swear you could probably put swampwater in the oil and it would run just fine!

agreed!

Vr6s man....as long as you dont go FI with them, they are such great motors.

my two mk3 vrs lasted well into the upper 100k and they still drove like new when i sold them....

you know what they say though at 100k a vr6 is getting broken in...while a 1.8t is getting broken ;D

My VR had two issues (other than the ABS sensor that went bad) and that was the coolant after-run pump and the shifter rod bushings went out in the intake manifold. I had planned to keep my jetta for a LONG time, and am still kicking myself somewhat for not getting aother VR. At least I didnt get a 1.8T  My 2.0 slow has about 126K miles on it, my brother drives it now. It has a LOT of mods (no boost) and the only thing that has been done ever was an O2 sensor and the MAF, but that was covered under warranty.

2.slow 60,000 miles and no major break down's

That one was still brand new.  My 2.0 is sitting at about 183K miles with no issues.

Hope your Audi is good to you.  As you already know, there are gems and lemons in every make and model

it has cupholders that are under the arm rest looks like a soda can only thing that will fit , has the electronic climate controls , leather, the upgraded stero , sunroof, heated seats , and the fog lights are in the headlight assembly and i think there hid's pretty f'en bright but that could be a aftermarket thing the guy did and that's pretty much it nothing real special

how would i be able to tell if the turbo is the str8t ko3 or the ko3sport , just in case the previous guy might have changed it at some point? the only tubo's i've messed with are on large diesel trucks so i'm use to turbo  whine

if your "cupholders" are the flip up kind then your car is a 99 not a 99.5, those flip-up cup holders suck, get the 99.5 console/armrest out of a junk yard. (there is one in denver, they pull it, you pay for it, but usually have good parts, i replaced my hood/rear deck. both bumpers in same color for 500.00 can't remeber the name off the top of my head)

good news the 99 had a AEB head and drive by cabel, but bad news it had  a K03 not the ko3sport.....

you can tell the diff types of turbos, by looking on the side of the turbo for a blue/silver label, it will tell you the exact turbo sitting in the car.

solid upgrades for a ko3 for pretty cheap find a good used k03sport, and get the k04 software, upgrade the diverter valve and exhaust/downpipe, huge gains. also a set of 17x8.5/17x10 wheels are in order.... get it done.
