fothermucking Vista...help!
« on: October 25, 2008, 11:37:42 AM »

OK i am stumped....i have a Dell XPS 410, 2.4ghz dc intel, 4gb, 512gb gforce, etc.  running vista premium 64bit.

last night i was working on my PC, i got up to go grab a drink and everything is fine...

came back, sat down and my mouse and keyboard would not respond.

pointer would not move, ctrl+alt+del, regular windows key commands etc... nothing works.

unplugged both, waited 3 minutes plugged back in, still not working.

unplugged both, plugged in my gaming keyboard and mouse (have their own drivers/programs etc)... no cookies here.

plugged both keyboards adn both mouses in....still no cookies here.

did a hard reboot, cloud not get into bios, or load in safe mode. still no keyboard. still no mouse...

i did a quick google, seams my fix is in the recovery disks....wait. ... dell didnt send them with the PC....fuckers. ...

ok find disk / program, found them in a torrent and an iso image. wtf is that? and how do a use it...more google. download the needed programs to use the restore files.......le arned how to use those programs and 45 minutes later i have a new recovery disk for windows vista 64bit

put disk in drive reboot.....not hing happened....

shut down try again....still nothihg....the n i remembered i needed to get into the bios to load from the disk....

problem, i can't get into damn bios with out a friggen keyboard, so i can't do this either....WTF how the hell do i fix this?

(and  before some smart ass says something, i'm writing this on my laptop)

side note: i am pretty damn sick and tired of having to fix these stupid issues and bugs....

anyone here know what a good linux product is witha  decent GUI, i've about had it with windows et al.

Could probably be your motherboard.  do you have any added peripherals?. If so try removing them and boost I mean boot  the pc with the basic essentials.

Tried different USB ports?

Ubuntu is a very good linux crossover. Good gui, pretty user friendly.

I had a similar problem about 6mos ago.  Dell didn't send the recovery disks for me either.  I did call them up and they sent them though.  I actually ended up with some extra ones because they sent the wrong Windows version the first time.

I have yet to take a liking to Vista so far.  Granted I haven't given it much of a chance either.  I actually just bought a new computer from a guy on Craigslist yesterday.  It's also a Dell and came with Vista.  I turned it on, tried it for about 10mins, decided I didn't like it and I reformatted the drive and installed XP on the machine.  I'm much happier now.  I just have to spend all weekend getting it up to my standards and loading all the programs I want on it.

I hate to say it but it sounds like Vista isn't your problem. Windows loads after the BIOS (Basic Input Output System) loads. If you can't use keyboard commands to get into the BIOS then it's either the keyboard or the ports on the motherboard. Is the keyboard a USB or PS/2 connection? Try finding a keyboard of the other connector and try that.

Well damn, you're just fucked aren't ya?  ;D Pop the case open and make sure all of the USB connections on the motherboard are connected tight and then call Dell. They are supposed to have good customer service. Is it still new enough to have a warrenty?

A mac is just a PC running a proprietary Debian Linux distribution. He'd still be up shit creek with a mac in this situation. Probably more so because he'd have to get all of his parts from Apple instead of using an "IBM compatible" component.

As a quick test, turn the computer off, unplug the keyboard from the computer, and turn it back on. Does the computer beep at you and throw up some "keyboard" code on the screen?

scott, dell c/s is ok, not sure about their techy cust servicce....PC was purchased about 6months ago, so it should still be under warranty.

nope goes right into "load safe mode screen"

guess I'll be on the phone tomorrow or Monday to get this fixed...
