rant on radios and german engineers (i'm getting new brakes)
« on: October 17, 2008, 01:01:10 PM »

Here is one thing I do dislike about these cars.  Instead of making the radio turn on/off with the ignition some "super smart" german engineer actually went through the effort of making the car beep at you with the same constant tone used when the keys are in the ignition or the headlights are still.  Now for one, you've got the same annoying arse constant tone for three seperate scenarios.  And two, maybe instead of having the car tell you you left the radio on (because the music doesn't  ) they could have made it where the radio just turned off.  Even my 78 Rabbit would do that.  Heck, even GM is smart enough to let the radio stay on after you've shut down the car until you open the door.  Then magically it turns off.

Oh yeah, and what moron bean counter decided I would rather know what time it is then what my boost pressure is?  I mean seriously people, I thought these were the Germans.  the same people that refused to put cup holders in BMW's because it distracts from the driving experience.

Speaking of cup holders, what the hell am I supposed to put in these things?  I can't even fit a can of RockStar in the thing without reforming the can on a lathe.  Its like the sick Nazi fok was like, "here ya go lilttle american, have a cupholder.  hahahaaa, it don't fit you're supersized fatboy soda!! heil fuhrer!"

Another thing, why is it that the UrS4 weighs about 800,000lbs more than my wife's B5 S4 yet has brakes on it smaller than my 78 Rabbit?  I just did the brakes on her B5 and those things are massive.  12" stock rotors, I mean I honestly don't even know why people make big brake upgrades for it.  I can already take her chipped car and do a nose stand on the highway with the stock brakes.  Now while this is fun when going down to my local skate park to show up the skaters on the halfpipe, its can be a bit scary in the snow. No worries of that in my 93 S4 though, hit the brakes going into a turn while traveling a little more than double the speedlimit and you are rewarded with your foot going through the floorboard and the car maybe shedding 5mph in 100ft. Ok, thats exaggerated and not true at all.  Still the point is valid.

Ok, there completes my rant.  It actually doesn't bother me that much except I've been a mechanic for 7yrs and have realised more and more with every year that engineers are fracking morons.

Luckily the aftermarket is full of people that had engineering degrees but weren't dumb enough to let bean counters control them.  Now that I've worn the slots off my slotted front rotors its time for the baby black upgrade.

Thats actually all I wanted to say, I'm getting ready to replace/upgrade my brakes. :D  I just decided this way was more entertaining for myself.

I hear ya man. I could rant and rave all day long on how retarded they are for hanging the oil pan lower than the rest of the car and on top of that slapping an aluminum one on instead of the original steel. I can't even boost around. Too worried the road will be rough and I'll crack my pan. Why couldnt they stick to the steel? Or at least tuck that fucker under a subframe or something.  Moving the next part of my rant to Colorado and their shitty F**cking roads. They put in a freshly paved road and make the man hole cover and 2 1/2 drop. Driving across it at 30 mph and scratch the new 20th front. Thanks assholes .

Enough about my probs, Can't wait to see the stoptechs or whatever set up you slap on it  :t-up:

EDIT: Sorry for the VW talk i didnt realize this wasnt in the anything goes  :P :hammer:

Try coming to NY. They pave the road and then make the manhole cover a good 2 1/2-3" ABOVE the road. After a few weeks they throw a rubber ring around it so you can go up and over instead of slamming into it. A car as low as the ginster fs here would get destroyed within a week of in-town driving. Oh, and even better than manholes? When they redo a main street, they don't line it up with the side streets for ages. So you slam up and down a 3" lip all the time. And where ever there are bus stops, which are like ever mile or so, they put in a giant steel plate. Not flush with the new pavement, on top of the new pavement. Our roads are seriously brutal.

LMAO!!!! Holy shit Rich, that shit was fuuuuuny!!!

Go get some big brakes brotha, it is like night and day!  As for the cupholder, I have some of those 99 cent truck stop cup holders you hand from the door and they have served me quite well.  Germans are all abut driving the car not eating dinner in it, so the cupholder was clearly an afterthought and something that they really did not give two shits about.

That is some funny shit and i couldnt agree more.  Myself also being in the business for 7 years now I kinda gave up fighting the Germans...  Some of the shit ive seen has just been jaw dropping... Contrary to popular colorado belief I feel the roads here are not that bad and that CDOT doesnt do too bad of a job (i use that term loosely) Im born and raised in Pennsylvania where the roads are pretty much just like new york except i think we do have a bit more pot holes...

as a side note.  Brandon you can get a steel pan I believe IMPEXFAP still offers them are they are cheaper then a replacement aluminum one.

Enjoy your new brakes and if i do remember correctly some european countries have a law against having open beverages in the vehicle (non-alcoholic)  and thats why when we buy a euro car the cupholders are actually an after thought u for the american market.  Please someone feel free to correct me on this I remember hearing it years ago...

Shit last time I was in Germany it was perfectly legal to have open containers of alcohol in the car as long as the driver wasn't the person drinking it.

My mk5 actually has decent cup holders. I can fit big gulps and 1 liter sodas in the holder in the door pocket and drinks the size of Sobe's juice drinks in the center console. If I want to listen to the radio while I detail it, I just hit the "on" button for it. It'll stay on for 30 minutes then shut down as long as the battery doesn't drain past a certain capacity. Goes to show that after awhile the Germans can design a car with American creature comforts. ;D

Of coarse I have a mk2 too. I went through the hassle of installing cupholders from a Taurus into where the ash try was. What was my reward for this headache? A change holder and the ability to set cans of soda somewhere. If I get a 20oz bottle of coke I still have to jam it in between the seat and e-brake handle. :banghead:

Man, I'm sure you guys got the joke.  On audiworld I posted the exact same thing and they wanted to crucify me.  One guy went so far as to suggest I trade my UrS4 in for a Camry.   ::)

So let me set the record straight, I love my UrS4 and don't ever want to get rid of it.  The only thing I'm not overly happy with are the front brakes and that'll be rectified soon as my brakes are getting worn out.

I generally run with the theory that if I bought it, I like it. If I keep dumping money into it to fix/upgrade it, I like it. I guess Audi people think differently and can't take a joke. Maybe this is the root of their poor taste in wheels? ;D

Work at an Audi dealer... MOST Audi owners have no soul so not only can they not take a joke I dont even think they can breathe...  They are some sort of subhuman lifeform that is able to survive without oxygen.  I think upon nuclear attack they and cockroaches will be the only things left... Besides twinkies of course.

I'm afraid I kind of have to agree on the hole door mounted cupholder thing.  Maybe if you were driving one of those paltry little cars made by VW, but you are driving the most superior of the superior.  We Audi owners have to set the bar for the ultimate in class and refinement in the Euro car scene.  We wouldn't want some polo shirt wearing, blue tooth ear peice taling, M3 owner to suddenly take over the position of "most awesomely outstanding and superior european sedan" owner.  That would be horrible, even worse if it was a VW owner. :D

yep, standard cupholder for a mk2. only problem is you have to get a large or extra large drink to get it to work properly.

the only car i've ever owned with a usable cupholder is my mk4. but you have to be careful with a full big gulp...took a curve a little too "enthusiastical ly" and my wife ended up with it in her lap.

You Audi people are a strange lot.

When did a car with an RS2 conversion become a good idea for a DD?

I have owned the car for a just over a year now and it has been less trouble than any of my Mk2's.... by a LONG shot.  It is daily driven, but we are talking MAYBE ten miles a day.  Oh, did I mention it has 204,000 miles on it?  These cars are reliable, and all of my parts are OEM, or far better than OEM so reliability is not a question.  My car also came with dealer maintenance records from mile 10 all the way up to 190,000, so I have compelte confidence in my car and it's ability to get me (or my wife) from A to B.  THe only real serious issue I have had was a clutch, and while it was a tiny bit of a headache replacing it, most of that was only because it was my first time dropping an O1E tranny, so there was a learning curve.   I drove it from CT to AL and back to MD, and the only issue I had on that trip was my alternator overheating and shutting down in 101 temps while sitting in NYC traffic at rush hour.  Had I planned the trip better that would not have been an issue.

;D  AUDI actually predates VW by a long shot.  They have eventually become virtually one and the same, but Audi was around before VW was even a wet dream in Hitler's mind.

And of course I still like VW's, but come on man this is me we're talking about.  If I can't talk a little smack and be a sarcastic arse then my life is over.

You Audi people are a strange lot.

My car is a 93 and it has 216,000+ miles on it.  I am the thirs owner and have all the maint. records going back to when it was first purchased.  I also have the original window sticker and all the little owner's manuals in the original booklet.  This thing has been a dream to drive and so far has proven to be amazingly reliable.
The only things wrong with it are:
- Cruise control is a bit twitchy and likes to accelerate all the way to 100mph when you set it  (kind of fun, and as I don't ever use it not a big deal)
- A/C needs to be recharged (it blows cold but doesn't cool as well when you are sitting at a light idling)
- Passenger side heated seats don't work (both front and rear, haven't even looked into it yet so not sure why)
- Electric Mirrors don't work anymore (this actually happened right after I bought it, as they are set it doesn't bother me.  I'm pretty sure its the switch though.)

Other than that the car has nothing wrong with it and while I would love to respray it (the paint has a lot of little scratches that remind me of those carwash brushed they used to use at the autowashes) it looks amazing for a 15yr old car.  Its actually in better shape overall than my 2001 GTI VR6 was when I got it on 2004.  It still gets up and goes and gets consistent gas mileage (about 22.5 mpg per tank).  I do daily drive mine and I put on it an easy 50 - 70 miles per day.

They are the same company, but driving an Audi and a VW is a world of difference. My 90 was recently totaled, and now I'm driving a 20th. This car is 10 years newer and nowehere near the experience I had in the Audi. Sure the 1.8t is A LOT more fun, but if I hate the fact that I lose all control of the front tires if I get on it hard. Maybe chalk it up to inexperience driving a FWD turbo car, but the interior is also a downgrade imo. I hope I grow to like this car more as time goes on, but after this one, I'm getting back into an Audi asap.

Just put in the order on my  Porsche Boxster 4-piston monobloc calipers over the 1999 Audi A8 312x25mm rotors with stainless brake lines.

No more non-stopping me so fast  my face hits the steering wheel brakes for me.

Coming from MK1 and MK2 chassis VW's that is the one thing that I am still getting used to with the UrS4.  It weighs a lot and has a lot of mass.  These things have a curb weight of 3839lbs so there is a lot of Newton's Laws of Motion to work against when going into a trun hard.  I would have gone to the even larger "Big Blacks" but from what I've read these will be the best for my purposes.  The "Big Blacks" might cause me headaches in the snow and besides, they cost a lot more.  I'm not tracking my car, I just want a better pedal feel/brake response when going through the twisties to/from work.

BTW, the B5S4 weights in with a curb weight of 3384lbs.  Thats a 505lbs difference!!!!
