Buying a car out of state?
« on: September 22, 2008, 05:26:51 PM »

I know it's been a while. I am buying a car from New York. Its a 2002 1.8T. Is there anything I need to do before I can drive it? Sorry if it's a stupid question, but I don't know. It will probably be shipped.

Coming from out of state you'll need a VIN inspection done by one of our state troopers. Outside of that, register it.

How do I make arrangements for them to do it? Does it cost, and how much?

Talk to the DMV. They'll be able to tell you specifically what to do. I know you will need to make an appointment with a state trooper when you get the paperwork from the DMV. They should be able to give you a temp tag for a few days to get this done. I have no idea how much it will cost.

Vin verification used to be like $5.  Back when they did emissions

I need a road trip. Have me drive it out to you. ;)

In Steamboat I've had the DMV people walk outside with me and look at the VIN themselves, but I'm guessing metro DMV's are too busy for that kind of thing. It's a very simple deal if you go with the state police, they just look at the vin, look at the title and sign a slip of paper. Nothing you really need a appointment for, just call ahead so you aren't sitting at the station for ages.

Well thanks for the info guys. I don't think I'll need it. Since I can't get a hold of him at all. Tried for the past 2 days. Thanks again.

I got my USP on eBay.  I flew out to Ohio and drove it back.  At the time I was living in Greeley and the DMV dude just walked out and verified the VIN.  It's a small town convenience I guess.
