There's no mistaking the huge front air intakes of Audi's super-hot TT-RS, captured for the first time on testing duty in the U.S. — previously we'd seen prototypes at Germany's Nürburgring racetrack. While we originally believed this Porsche Cayman-fighting TT would be powered by a turbocharged 5-cylinder, the latest thinking is that it will instead use Audi's brand-new 3.0-liter TFSI supercharged V-6, which can be found in the new A6, and at a higher power level in the upcoming S4. Figure on this engine making close to 350 bhp in the all-wheel-drive TT-RS.

The car's fancy wheels house big cross-drilled brakes, while the suspension will be significantly snubbed-down to handle the car's newfound power. Telltale oval exhaust tips hint that, yes, this is an Audi RS model. Although the test car pictured looks near production-ready, our source at Audi says we shouldn't expect the car on sale in the U.S. until at least mid-year 2009. And that we shouldn't expect it to be cheap — it will most likely cost more than $70,000.

That's what I thought. I don't see it really selling at that price. It looks kinda like a BMW coupe/hatchback to me, especially from the back. There's a whole lot of cars that would be ahead of this on my wishlist if I had $70k

Well, I was kind of hoping for the turbo I-5 they were said to be using at first.  I think it was based on the 2.5L in the Jettas, Golfs etc.  But, that probably would have been an orphaned engine since I hadn't heard of anything else using it.

But, it should still be a fun ride with the S4 motor.

I honestly don't think(hope) it will be $70K.  I think maybe someone saw the overseas price and just converted it to USD.  That
s never a good idea and will always give an inflated price.  We will see though I guess.
