Bargain 135i anyone?
« on: August 30, 2007, 01:36:41 PM »

Looks like Hyundai is going RWD with a turbo 4cyl or 300HP V-6 for the redesigned Tiburon.

http://www.automobilemag.com/features/news/0709_2009_hyundai_tiburon/

Supposed to start in the low $20K range.

I'd bet that it'll be better-looking than the BMW as well.

Damn... impressive.

Hyundai has been making some sweet cars.

They are going to be bringing some diesel offering soon.

That new Tiburon is going to be VERY popular! I actually see Hyundai filling the true "people's car" gap that VW chose to leave in the market by not listening to all of the enthusiasts that were only trying to tell them what made sense!

I even talked to the folks at CP&B (VW's ad agency) about this when they interviewed me last week. They are quite frustrated with all of VW's decisions in terms of the US market, but they are doing what they can with the mess placed in their laps.

dude... Hyundai is becoming a SERIOUSLY competent car maker... it is time to shake off that stereotype and give them a fair shake.

Agreed.

The new Santa Fe is a serious competitor to the RX350, it even looks similar.  It's not 100% to the Lexus, but 90% close and enough to make up for the price difference.  They will also be selling a true competitor to the large, luxury sedan market with legitimate credentials as well including an all-new, nearly 400HP V-8.  This is just another step in Hyundai's rise.

The increase in styling, design, comfort, power etc. in each iteration of Hyundai's vehicles is amazing. Look at a Sonata sedan from 5-7yrs ago and compare it to today's model(itself, already a few years old) and you'll be quite amazed.  Definitely not something the domestics have yet been able to attain.

... especially not at the price.

Got a buddy with an 07 Sonata Limited with the Platinum package.  VERY nice car, and it really goes when you push on that pedal on the right.

Well, we'll let it ride on this car.

I do have to say, when i had the S4 in the shop, one of the cars they gave me as a loaner was a new sonata.  I was actually pretty impressed.  Engine had good power, interior had a decent quality feel to it (far better than any domestic car), the only thing that sucked was the ride/handling and the engine responsiveness .  But, then again, i was used to driving an s4, so /shrug.

I'll try to give them the benefit of the doubt.

its just the problem is going to come up that b/c they will be relatively cheap, a bunch of asshat kids are going to buy them, then they're gonna race them, then they're gonna wreck them, then the insurance rates are going to skyrocket on them.  And then i'm still gonna hate them.

Hyundais are very nice. My family has um, 4 or 5 I think. A sante fe, a few of the 4-dr sedans (whatever they're called, one in GT trim which is VERY nice. The auto trannies seem to have a tendancy to die at 100k though. At least the ones from early 2000, I dunno about now. My cousin beats the shit out of his <4-dr sedan name here> in NYC and it's been totally problem free.

Scott, yeah those poor ad agencies. It must be soooooooo hard to accept giant checks to come up with running gags like the Deutchland guy in the lab coat. Are you kidding me? Agencies don't care if they're designing ads for the greatest car in the world or a tin can with a couple wheels and a wind-up motor in it. Nice blantant subtle name-drop there too.  ::)

Easy tiger, just busting your balls a bit. Yes, I can understand that anything outside the "sweatpants" or "questionable car repair" categories may throw you a bit...

It's nice that these guys actually care, but that makes it pretty hard to do their job. If you're unexcited and unmotivated by the line of products you're supposed to shill, it means you have to work 3x as hard to get others excited and motivated. And what kind of mess do they have? VW's cars aren't quite as shitty as they were in early 2000, everyone loves the GTI and R32 and their line of cars now come with bigger engines, which means the ad companies now get to mention the hp of the cars instead of trying to hide it. Sure, there's nothing big and new and exciting debuting, but that's pretty much the norm in the car industry.

Wow, looks like the Tiburon is going to be beating up on 350z's.  I wonder if Nissan has any plans to replace/update the Z.  Its a great car that does what it is supposed to better than a lot of other cars out there, but its getting old and needs some updating.  Especially the interior.  It looks great until you sit in it and feel just how cheap those plastics are.  I give mad props to Hyundai for doing with the Tiburon what VW should have done with the new Rocco.  Oh yeah, and speaking of new Rocco. WHERE THE *F* IS IT!!??!!

Didn't you get the memo?  We aren't getting it.  VW(edit: VWoA) is too afraid of cannibalizing GTI sales.  It is going to be sold, just overseas and not in the US.

More news:
http://www.automobilemag.com/auto_shows/2007_los_angeles/0711_2007_hyundai_genesis_coupe_concept/index.html

Looks nice, not 100% sold on the louvered hood though.  It is still a concept however.  I see a fair amount of G35/37 coupe influence as well which is great, I love those cars.  It's also standard practice for Hyundai, they seem to swipe their styling from a number of other manufacturers.

Agreed on the louvered hood. And I just don't like the whole sweeping headlights fashion trend that's been going on. Reminds me a little of an eclipse, especially the back, but that may be the color. The cuts in the side are unique and pretty neat and I like the nose as well. Looking pretty sporty.

I have been contemplating that for a couple years actually.  I have wanted a TT since the first day I saw one back when they came out in Germany.  I was living in Germany at the time and actually got to drive one before they ever went on sale in the US.
