Looking for the right Machine Shop...
« on: August 30, 2007, 06:27:31 AM »

... that can lighten AND BALANCE a flywheel for a 98 Jetta 2.0.

Most machine shops I have spoke to cannot even resurface this flywheel.  I found a few that could lighten it, but not balance it.

Any suggestions?

C-Springs shop if possible.

Probably less hassle in the long run to just buy one that's already lightened and balanced

Just hoped to find someone who does this one.  Trannys out and I wanted to try to get it back in this weekend if I can find someone to lighten it.

I have used Burts before with no problems. You will not get it back from any shop that fast probably!

Actually Burts lighten my 65' bug flywheel and my 90'GLI flywheel. They actually know there VW's unlike most places that will just say "yeah we cando it" they reall CAN DO IT! Also they sell Amsoil products too. Just ask for Joe, it is the red door on the side of the building. ANd they are really FAST too. I had a one day turn around both times. ANd they hot tanked my valve cover and oil pan on my SAAB in one day.

Well, I looked in and didn't see a reply, so I took it to Lanier's Speed Shop on Pueblo Ave.  They said that they could lighten it some without having to balance it.  I must admit it sounded odd, but wanted to get it lightened so I let them.  Turns out they were WRONG!  I got it back together on Saturday, and the flywheel is so out of balance that it shakes the entire motor.

So, next step is....

Anyone know a place that can balance the flywheel, Burt's said they couldn't balance it.  If I can't find a place that can balance it, I'll follow Jesus' advice, suck up the money I have invloved and get new one from EIP Tuning.

I assume it went something like this...

 "How'd them German's figure out how to put them cylinders so close together?"

... hours later ...

 "Holy Crap they're less than 20* apart!"

No more like, "Well, we can send this away to get it bored, or we can figure something out for double the price and half the time."

So, it was expensive.  But worth it, they do good work.

Glad to hear they do good work, but talked to Angelo to day and he said he couldn't balance it.  Looks like I'm buying a flywheel.

We've all learned a lesson or two along the way.  That's how it works.
Trust me though... I only give advice like that if I've already been down the road or have first hand knowledge of someone else going down that road  ;-)

try ECS tuning. You could also go to Bap Geons on austin bluffs... they might have one in stock.

Apparently one of the old threads that came up new.  I picked up one on Vortex and already have about 5k miles on it.  Love the feeling of a lightweight flywheel.  I strongly suggest anyone replacing a clutch get one.
