2 cylinders were at 100 PSI... specs call for at least 109. All 6 cylinders were under 120...

That's not horrible. I wonder if you might be better off honeing the cylinders and reringing it. What are the cost of parts to do it vs the going rate for a VR long block?

i could probably re-ring it... but I have never done a ring job before, and if i found a solid long block, i could drop it in...

i am pretty much out of motivation on this car... hence the 4K asking price... I just want to get it running, and out of my driveway

Ive got a short block that needs new rings and its pretty much apart.  Its in denver but I need to get it anyways. I could let you use it to rebuild it, put it in the mk2. When you are done, you could give me the block out of the 2 later. Sounds liek a hassle but just another option

not sure, i'd have to talk to swank. He has the block, its the one he blew when he overboosted.  Its pretty much just the block w/ the pistons in it, but I'll check w/ him.  IF i remember right it was just the rings that were the issue, pistons should be fine still.

Personally the hassle involved along with the fact that you've never done a rebuild makes a simple short block replacement the solution.

I suppose you could go with a long block but a short block would be cheaper.  As long as your head is good there's really no reason for a long block

I'll chat w/ swank and see what he says. You could coordinate getting the block w/ him if you do want it, as Im headed to minnesota on sunday.
Basically it would just cost you what the rebuild or repair would be.

I have a good cyl head for sale also if you want?

And before you shotgun your bottom i would check to see if adding a bit of oil in the spark plug holes changes your comp readings. Because most of the time unless you melted down a piston or something i bet you have a headgasket/cyl head/valve issue

Yeah... pretty much why I am looking for a good block

I am pretty sure the head is in good shape... rebuilt with a P and P job 30K miles ago... I am going to do a leak down test this weekend to finalize my decision

Well like i said also, squirt a little oil down the plug holes before each comp test to see if it raises your values. If it does it means its your rings, but if it doesnt change anything most likely problem isnt in your block

But leak-down also might show a bad set of rings when its your headgasket or warped head causing the problem.

Most of the time vw bottom ends are pretty durable, unless pushed to the max(which your car was not close, no offense) which is why i would not be searching for a motor just yet

You must not remember what happened... When I put the new turbo in I too the word of the manufacturer on the WG... I thought it was going to open at 8 lbs, but it didnt open until 24 lbs....

I drove the car to work right after I got everything back together, and when I saw the boost gauge, I thought I hooked the gauge back up wrong... It was correct....

That was on a 140K mileage block with stock compression

I am going to do the leak down tonight, and might even pul the head to take a look at the head gasket

barry i think your shit was way tired before it ever came into your possesion.  i could be wrong but looking at the motor is kinda looks like it's never been apart and nothing inside has ever been touched.  it looks like someone threw a turbo on a totally stock obd1 vr.  but i guess we'll see for sure when you pull it apart.
