Wheeling 08June08 at Eagle Rock
« on: June 01, 2008, 03:20:19 PM »

This is from my post on NAXJA.  i know there are several of you guys that have Jeeps and Yotas so lets bust them out and do some Sunday wheeling.  I probably won't have anybody in my Jeep with me so that means up to three people can ride along with me if they desire.  There might be more room for people to ride along depending on who all decides to go, so speak up if you want to ride along with somebody and we can make some arrangements.

So who is down to go next Sunday? It will be June 8th and I'm pretty sure the trail will be Eagle Rock down by Colorado Springs. Its rated as being a difficult trail that is narrow, steep, and rocky. It can be muddy and slippery in places, especially this early in the season. Its is most likely not suitable for stock vehicles. I haven't run this trail in a few years, but when we did my buddies 2004 Rubicon had little problems with it. He was only running 33's at the time so its not like you'll need a super built vehicle for it. Maybe someone from the Colorado Springs area can update us with current info. There is a fairly easy trail that is connected to it so if anybody wanted to run that trail they could. The easy trail is Mt. Baldy. If you want any further info on the trail it is number 68 in the `"Guide To Colorado Backroads & 4-Wheel Drive Trails.

We can work out the details on when/where to meet, but I figure the earlier the better as that gives us more time to run the trail and allow us to deal with any breakdowns in the day light.

I figure a good meet point for those of us north of Castle Rock would be the Shell station off of Wolfensberger Rd (exit 182). Its pretty easy to find and they have a large dirt lot right next to them we could park in. After that we could head down to the Springs and rally at the 7-11 gas station next to Denny's on Lake Ave. Its right off of Exit 138 (the Circle St. Exit) in Colorado Springs. There we could join up with anybody from the Springs are or south and top off our fuel tanks along with pick up any last minute snacks/drinks we'll need.

To get to the trail from there we just continue West along Lake Ave towards the Broadmoor Hotel.  Then bear right around the backside of the hotel to El Pomar Rd.  Bear left on Penrose Blvd.  Turn right on Old Stage Road and merge with Gold Camp Road after 7miles.  Coninue West on Gold Camp Rd 8.1 miles to road 370C on right.  This is the start of trail.

Im going campin this weekend and the base of eagle rock might be a spot we will go to.  If we camp there I might be down but I dont have enough clearance on my yota to make it up that bitch so Im not sure I'll be driving my truck if I do go.

Well like Isaid, you can definately ride along with me.  What kind of yota do you have though?  If its a TRD I'm sure it'll make it.  Stock 31" tires w/ a rear locker?

yeah its a trd tacoma w/ 31's. Im sure it would make it but not w/o some damage more than likely.  I just dont have enough ground clearance.
I went down eagle rock w/ you in the ex's truck and we were the only one that made it thru w/o some damage... and that was on a 3 inch lift in snow.  Going up would be harder and w/o snow alot more trenches and drops...

I think Im going camping at the crags anyways after talking to the people that are going. I'll get a lift on the truck soon enough and i'll be game for some harder action

don;t forget less weight too.  that thing had a whopping 50hp of fury.  one thing that hurt it though was a real crappy low gear.

never made it, between a lack of general interest from others and a bent driveshaft on my buddy's XJ we decided to nix the trip.  another factor was that another friend of ours went up it last night with his extremely well built XJ and broke it.  nothing serious, just ripped a control arm mount off of his axle.  unfortunately the other rig with him broke down too (not sure what broke on that one) so he had a really long night.

instead i helped a friend put a new engine in his MJ (comanche pick-up).  we pulled it into his garage last night and undid all the wiring and pulled the radiator.  stopped about midnight (didn't get it pulled in until almost 11pm) and then continued working on it today.  got it running today, now just got to track down some vacuum leaks and a few misc wires.   if anyone is interestend in an 86 4wd MJ w/ 2.5L 4cyl and 5spd sitting w/ about 4-5 inches of lift and 31's let me know, he'll probably be selling it once we get it all buttoned up.  we'll also be painting it camo using the actual army layout guide for the old dodge pickups for a guide.
