The inexpensive tire challenge
« on: February 18, 2008, 05:07:51 PM »

This is for all you guys/gals that don't have anything better to do and have basically reached the end of the internet.

I need to buy a set of tires and in true 719 fashion I'm looking to spend as little as possible.

I need a set of 205/50/16's
I'm looking for something more along the lines of a longer life tire versus performance.

Feel free to post up links to the deals you can find.

I've already done my searching.  I just figured I would put this out for bid since some people know of those "good deals"

Anyone have any experience with Kumho's?

I'm not looking for Autox tires.  I want something that will last under normal driving conditions

I was pretty impressed with BFG Touring T/A.

I will admit a bias, my dad builds tires for BFG.  Before anyone asks, the discount only applies to immediate family.

I ordered the 205/50/15 tires for the rear of the BMW from some online store - wanna say mot-option.com or something like that.  Was the cheapest by far.  Found them with a simple search comparing prices.  Even replaced one for free and sent it 2-day when I called and told them one of them came with a nail in the sidewall.

Good all around tire Pat. I have run a few sets of those on some spare "tool around" rims and they were fine. Tread wear was minimal even with my spirited driving. Road noise wasn't too bad, overall rating 7.5 out a 10

Pat I love my Kumho tires! I have used them on my last 5 cars so far and the tire life is really good on them and also they stick to the ground.

My parents put a set of those on their Audi A4 and they have nothing but good things to say about them.

What model Kumho's were you guys running?

I've been looking at the Ecsta AST's

I also had some Kuhmos and they lasted a LONG time on a car that needed an alignment. Plus they were like 87 bucks each for 205 40 r 17s

edit: I had the ecsta's also... and bought them on base

I've always ran the cheapest Kumhos on my Audi's, never had a problem with them.  And I'd get at least 40k miles out of them.

Strange... I've been reading reviews on the Ecsta AST's and about 75% say they don't last long and are very noisy, the other 25% say the exact opposite

Huh, Well I just remember I'm running on ASX's right now.  I love them.  I've never realized a tire noise issue before.  But maybe that's because I'm in an Audi with all the great German Engineering and Sound proofing effort.  Speaking of tire noise, Hankook Ice bears are some noisy bastards.  There's a bitchin thread in here of mine about them.

I've seen some positive references to ASX's.  I'm going to read up on them as well.
Bottom line here is that I was the most for the least amount of money... don't we all  ;D

I see people getting 30K plus miles out of the Hankook Ventus HRII H405's
http://www.discounttiredirect.com/direct/findTireDetail.do?fsv=false&pc=11805&ra=findTireDetail.do

That's about what I'm looking for right there.  The Goodyear (Crapyear) tires currently have about 35K on them but in all honesty they were probably done about 10K ago.  I've been nursing them along for a while now.

A lot depends on the person, where they live, road conditions and how they drive.  I'll say that as crappy as the roads are up here from all the beating they take those tires were fine. Something else, some cars just have zero insulation against outside noise so those people are gonna bitch even if the tires were made of feathers. As for wear, well there are plenty of ways to make a tire wear fast if you want.
I'll stick with what I posted before 7.5 out a 10 Good tire for the price, would buy again.

BFG G-Force Sports are awesome tires. Slightly more on tirerack that the Kumhos you're looking at and slightly less tread rating, but they rule. I had them on my scirocco and they stuck like glue, even in some hardcore rain on the highway. I even managed to move the car a few miles when there was light snow on the ground. After about 7k miles, they still looked brand new. They also have a ZR rated sidewall. I got them in the exact same size for like $65 each.

I love these tires! I have them on my MPV and they are alittle loud because that van has no sound damping. But on my Saab I don't hear a thing. I bought mine from Discount Tire.

You might also look into BFG Traction TAs.

My only complaint was that the shoulders wore faster than the rest of the tread.  I think they fixed the design to minimize this as a lot of people were running into this issue.

Regardless, the prices are awesome and I still got well over 40,000 miles out of them.
